Read the build story: DIY Drift Kart — How I Built It →
Real numbers, from a finished buildHow much does it cost to build a drift kart?
$2,027 USD, about $3,095 AUD, buying every part new. That is the listed bill of materials total for the petrol drift kart I designed and built in my garage. Supplier prices and exchange rates change, so treat it as a budgeting guide. Here is where the money goes, what a donor kart actually saves, and the costs people forget.
- Steel and cut parts (tube, laser cut brackets, CNC hubs, sheet metal trays)$625
- Axle, hubs, wheels (30mm axle, bearing flanges, rims, tyres, drift rings)$810
- Brakes and steering (hydraulic brakes, tie rods, knuckle bearings, wheel)$280
- Engine and drive (6.5hp engine, clutch, chain, sprocket)$235
- Seat and hardware$80
Category figures are approximate USD amounts and add to $2,030; the listed BOM total is $2,027. Confirm current supplier quotes before ordering.
Parts budget plus digital plans: US$2,176. This combines the listed US$2,027 parts budget and US$149 Builder Pack. The extras below are additional.
The part nobody budgets for
Everyone prices the engine first. The engine was $235 including the clutch, chain and sprocket. The rear axle assembly, a 30mm axle, two bearing flanges, brackets, hubs, rims and tyres, was $810. More than the engine and the brakes combined. If you are planning a build, that is the line to get right before anything else, and it is the one that catches most first-time builders.
What a donor kart actually saves
The common advice is to buy a used go kart and strip it for the engine, clutch, chain, axle and rear wheels. I did exactly that. I paid $900 AUD for a donor, used those parts, and sold the leftover frame for $150. Net cost $750 AUD for parts that would have been about $855 AUD new.
So the donor saved about $100. Not nothing, but not the bargain it sounds like, and I inherited a used engine and worn bearings for it. My rule now: a donor is worth it below roughly $700 AUD with a running engine. Above that, buy new and know what you have.
Fabricated parts are included
The parts budget includes approximately US$550 for outsourced laser cut and CNC parts within the US$625 steel and cut parts category. Do not add that US$550 again. This does not cover hiring someone to weld or assemble the kart for you.
Extra costs beyond the parts budget
- Digital plans. The Builder Pack is US$149, separate from the US$2,027 parts budget.
- Hired labour. If you outsource chassis welding or assembly, get a separate quote. That labour is not included.
- Consumables. Welding wire or rod, cutting discs, primer and paint. Budget US$80 to US$120.
- Tools you do not have. The build needs a welder, an angle grinder, a drill and a hole saw. The original frame uses bent tube. To reproduce it, use a suitable tube bender or have a fabrication shop make the bends. Mitred or pie-cut welded alternatives require extra fabrication work and assessment of the joints and geometry; they are not a simple vice-bending substitute. Check the drawings and your fabrication approach before buying. Budget separately for equipment you need to buy or additional fabrication labour, including outsourced tube bending.
- Taxes and currency conversion. Allow for any applicable taxes, duties and payment conversion fees.
- Freight. Steel tube and a 960mm axle do not fit in a satchel. Depends entirely on where you are.
Cheapest way to build it
If you want the floor, not the average: cut your own brackets from plate instead of ordering laser parts, buy a cheap 6.5hp clone engine, and source the axle and hubs secondhand from a kart club. It takes longer and the result is rougher, but it drives the same.
Where these numbers come from
Every line above is from the bill of materials that ships with the Builder Pack: 70 line items with supplier, quantity, unit price in AUD and USD, and a link for each part. The pack also has the CAD, drawings and cut-ready files, so the parts you are pricing are the parts you can actually make. Prices move; treat this page as a guide, and the BOM as the working document.
